How do dermatologists take such good care of their skin
When I was a child and I had a pimple or a
boil, my mom wud be dismissive about it. It was only during my dermat residency
that I realised that disorders pertaining to skin and hair affect a person's
psyche as much or may be even more than say a heart disorder..
And that was the time in my mid 20s that I
decided to start taking care of my skin.
- Sunscreen
If there is just 1 cream that a
person needs to apply to protect their skin. it will be a sunscreen. A
sunscreen protects not just from sunburn and suntan, but also aging, pigmentation
and even skin cancer.
A good sunscreen shud b non-sticky, water
resistant, UV A and UV B protective. Nowadays newer sunscreens seem to also
protect against blue light, Infrared light, pollution etc. Sunscrens have to
pplied generously and repeated every 2 to 3 hours.
Vitamin C cream /serum - A good Vitamin C
cream (>10% Vitamin C) should be used as a day cream before a sunscreen is
applied to correct the oxidative damage happening in the skin, reduce the
melanin synthesis and also provide hydration.
- Night cream
A good night cream should
contain 0.02 % retinol and Vitamin K to cause cellular turnover, stimulate
neocollagenesis thereby clearing out fine lines and age spots. Vit K improves
vascularity and prevents easy bruising in aged skin.
- Hydration
Dehydration is one of the most
important causes of not only dry skin but also dull skin.Drinking 3 litres of
water every day flushes out the toxins and helps the skin breathe
- Oral Antioxidants
No here I don't necessarily mean
supplements. All orange, red and yellow fruits are rich sources of antioxidants
that continually repair the on-going free radical damage in our body.
Additionally diet rich in omega fatty acids up the moisture content and also
act as good antioxidants.
- Correction of deficiencies
In addition to the above, if you have
anemia, Vit B12, Vit D3 deficiency, they need to be corrected to have a glowing
skin.
- Skin Rejuvenation Procedures
A good chemical peel (glycolic acid, kojic
acid, lactic acid, retinoic acid) can help in correcting patchy pigmentation,
curb acne and correct fine lines all at the same time. If the skin damage is
more intense then, a fractional resurfacing technique like Microneedling
Radiofrequency along with Platelet Rich Plasma infusion helps.
